Masamuene's Mac client · Unofficial community project
Play PSU Clementine natively on your Mac.
A native Mac client, built in Masamuene's workshop. No Wine and no virtual machine, so Mac players can join their PC friends on the Clementine private server.
Download for Mac Follow the build
Honest status. Version 1.0.2 is out for Apple Silicon and Intel Macs, and it runs at 60 frames a second by default. Online play, the lobby, sound and controllers work on Apple Silicon. The Intel build has only been tried through Rosetta so far, so real Intel testers are welcome.
Built in Masamuene's workshop
I'm Harold. Masamuene is my character in PSU, so it felt right to say this client comes out of his workshop.
The app contains only our own tools and runtime. On first launch it works from your own copy of the Clementine client and rebuilds it on your Mac as a native program. Your original install is never modified. We work on copies.
Latest from the workshop
Getting started
- Register an account at psu-clementine.com.
- Download the Clementine client from that site and keep it somewhere you can find it.
- Download our app from the Download page, then follow the step-by-step guide.
Another option, not our project
Another way: CrossOver
Before this client existed, some players ran the Windows client on Mac through CrossOver, a commercial Wine-based compatibility app made by CodeWeavers. We don't make or support it, and we can't promise it works for you. Ask in the community channels for other players' experience before buying anything.
Roadmap
- Phase 0
Recon done
I surveyed what the client needs from Windows and Direct3D 9, and how it talks to the server.
- Phase 1
Lift & link done
The game's code is translated into C and compiled for your Mac (Apple Silicon or Intel) on the player's own Mac. 27,752 of its 27,771 functions lift. The rest run in a built-in interpreter.
- Phase 2
First pixels done
Direct3D 9 runs on top of Metal. The title screen draws in a native Mac window, with sound, keyboard and mouse.
- Phase 3
Online done
The client logs in to Clementine, reaches the lobby and plays with other players. It only talks to Clementine's servers.
- Phase 4
Playable done
Controllers work through macOS, including a PlayStation 5 pad, and the frame rate stays capped as Clementine requires.
- Phase 5
Ship 1.0.0
A DMG with a double-click launcher, a bundled compiler and the audit that keeps game files out of it. Clementine staff approved the public release.
- Phase 6
Intel Macs out, testing
A separate Intel download, built the same way. It runs on an Apple Silicon Mac through Rosetta so far, and needs testers on real Intel Macs.
- Phase 7
1.0.1 out
Sound that no longer drops out after a load, macOS 13 for Apple Silicon, and the same version number for both downloads. Every build gets a short post.
- Phase 8
1.0.2 out
The game's own Frame skip setting in the launcher, set to 60 frames a second by default. Mac players had been on 30 without choosing it.
- Next
Fewer stalls next
The short stalls when the game loads, the delay before sound starts in a mission, Apple notarization so the Open Anyway step goes away, and more testing on different Macs.
- Then
Add-ons planned
Making the community's add-ons work on a Mac: interface changes, weapons and other mods. I need to find out what is possible and ask the Clementine team before I promise anything.
No dates are promised. This is a hobby project and the order or scope may change.
FAQ
How does installing work?
Two downloads and one drag. You download Clementine's client, then our app, and drag the app to Applications. The first time you open it, macOS asks you to confirm with Open Anyway because the app is not notarized. The steps are on the Download page.
Is this legal? Does it contain SEGA's game?
We never ship SEGA or Clementine code or assets. The download contains only our own tools and runtime. Conversion happens on your Mac from the client you already have.
Are you affiliated with SEGA or the Clementine team?
No. This is an independent, unofficial community project. We use no SEGA or PSU logos. The art on this site is my own. Clementine staff approved this public release.
Will it modify my Clementine install?
No. It works on copies.
Can I run it at an uncapped frame rate?
No. The frame rate stays capped, following Clementine's rules, and we won't add a way around it.
Are there settings for resolution, sound and controllers?
Yes. The launcher window opens before the game. Full screen or window, scaling, volume, the game's own resolution and keyboard keys are in Settings. Controllers need no setup: connect one before you press Play and macOS handles the rest.
Does it work on Intel Macs?
Yes, as a separate Intel download on the Download page. It is new: it has run on an Apple Silicon Mac through Rosetta, and not yet on a real Intel Mac or an Intel or AMD graphics chip. If you have an Intel Mac and want to help test, say so in the Discord.
Which macOS versions does it support?
Both builds need macOS 13 or later as of 1.0.1. Version 1.0.0 for Apple Silicon needed macOS 15. Nobody has tested macOS 13 or 14 yet, so tell us how it goes.
Does it need my own Clementine install?
Yes. You need a free Clementine account and your own copy of the Clementine client. The app builds the game from it on your Mac and never changes your original folder.
Tip the developer
I'm Harold, and I build this Mac client in my spare time. If it's useful to you, you can leave me a tip. It's entirely optional.
- Tips go to me personally.
- A tip is not a purchase and unlocks nothing.
- It is not a payment to Clementine, and it doesn't make this project affiliated with Clementine or SEGA.
The tip page is hosted by Stripe. This site never sees your card details. To support the game itself, use the Clementine Patreon card above.
